AK MC blue cotton luxury espadrille

The classic espadrille slip-on shoe can be traced back almost 4000 years with strong links to the Mediterranean area (particularly the Basque Country and the Catalan regions). This simple footwear with its hard-wearing rope sole and robust cotton canvas or linen upper was the preserve of peasants, fishermen and artisans. The name has derived from the Catalan word espardenya and refers to a plant indigenous to the south of Spain that is utilised in the production of ropes and basketry.

From its humble beginnings as a utilitarian shoe, it became fashionable in the 20th century with the rise of the riviera resorts of France, Italy and Spain where is was worn by the likes of Picasso, John F Kennedy and the designer, Yves Saint Laurent.

Alexander Kraft has taken this iconic shoe and refined it with a contemporary luxury sensibility whilst remaining  respectful to the original design. The AK MC luxury espadrille is made in the same Portuguese atelier as our classic Goodyear welted shoes are whole cut, ie made from a single piece of cloth instead of the traditional 3 that have been sewn together. The resulting form, and comfort of wear, is reminiscent of a loafer rather than a typical espadrilles. The iconic rope soles are imported from Southern Spain and are reinforced with a slim, natural rubber outer sole. This additional, protective layer combined with the addition of a leather insole affords the wearer a greater comfort that can take you from beach to cobbled street, or even the city when the temperature is too warm for heavy, leather shoes.

The blue colour can be elegantly paired with shorts of ecru or navy but can also be worn with cotton or linen trousers. But never with socks!

The espadrilles are true to size but will widen with wear like all espadrilles.
